7 Ways to make your Magento search engine (SEO) friendly

1. Sitemaps

Sometimes your sitemaps can become outdated for reasons such as editing, deleting and adding products or changing URLs so your sitemap may need a quick refresh to make sure it is passing the most relevant content to the search engines. To refresh your sitemap go to Catalogue -> Google sitemap -> find your sitemap and hit the refresh link.

2. Title tags, descriptions and keywords.

How can an SEO piece in any software not look at Title tags! Best practice Magento SEO is to look at each individually and change them or for a quick fix try using the default titles options. To do this go to System -> Configuration -> Design -> HTML Head and find the option for Default Title and put your best keywords in here.

3. URLs

Going back to the page optimisation in Magento in tip 2 you will also notice that you can change the page URLS which is handy when you want your site to rank for a specific keyword (s). Instead of yourdomain.co.uk/prodid=34756 you can have youdomain.co.uk/red-widgets.

4. User generated content

If you think about your products and how you refer to them...it may be completely different to how your customers think. By allowing them to use Tags (and to a degree other user generated content such as reviews) to let your customers add their own tags you start to get some keywords on the page with no effort required on your part. To see if anyone has added any tags so far simply login to your Magento store and go to Catalogue -> Tags ->Pending tags and allow the tags you think fit each of your products.

5. Canonical Tags

As I mentioned in my 12 tips for 2012 tips post, getting your canonical tags for pages set up correctly is vitally important to so to find out how to do it check out the bonus tip on how to implement canonical tags in Magento.

6. Internal link building

Linking deep within your site will ensure a well indexed website meaning youur pages will be optimised for the searches you want to show for. Using links within how to content (such as your blog and your product FAQs) will ensure some good keyword links and what's more...itís under your control.

7. Category pages

A lot of the time on this blog we ask you to take great care in your products and the optimisation of them for niche/product based keywords...what about the times when it is a general term and you offer a lot of price brands of a product try optimising your categories for these plural keywords which will ensure your category page works hard for you. Try this for yourself and see your search engine traffic increase or if you want more tips like these check out our 1 Day Marketing and Promotions Magento course which can be taken as a stand alone course or as a 5 day magento end user course.
